In the process he spreads vicious rumors about his running mates and uses incendiary campaign commercials to get himself elected. His campaign is derailed when he is caught-on-tape giving a bribe to a G-man posing as a mobster. His response to the "Mobscam" debacle is to claim he was "conducting his own investigation" and then fakes an 11th hour assassination on himself to engender voter sympathy.

Angelo has been drafted into the Italian Army in World War II. He does not like people shooting at him, so he tries all sorts of tricks to avoid being caught up in the action. However, events always seem to lead him back to the fighting.

Jack Altieri, a young Italian-American restaurant owner, arrives at Vesta awaits him a painting of the sixteenth century that depicts the veiled face of Medea of Carpi, noble woman processed to witchcraft. Shortly after the arrival of Jack, a country girl is killed in a mysterious way, dropping the suspicions of the Commissioner Gianzi on the young restorer, who is soon advised to not complete the work on the opera, because it would hide an ancient curse.

When Angelo, a friendly but mysterious stranger, arrives unexpectedly in a house in London, life for its occupants is never quite the same again.
